As a travel and tour practitioner, I have always regarded Malawi, nicknamed the warm heart of Africa, as one of the most enchanting destinations on my bucket list. Officially known as the Republic of Malawi, and formerly called Nyasaland, this landlocked country in Southeastern Africa is bordered by Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the north and northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south, and southwest. With an area of approximately 118,484 square kilometers (45,747 square miles) and an estimated population of 21,240,689 as of 2024, Malawi is a country rich in culture, natural beauty, and biodiversity. The capital city, Lilongwe, alongside other significant urban centers such as Blantyre, Mzuzu, and Zomba, offers a glimpse into the vibrant life of this remarkable nation.
The opportunity to explore this captivating country arose when I received an invitation from the Malawi Department of Tourism to participate in the Malawi International Travel Expo (MITE), held from April 25 to 27, 2023. This event was not only an exhibition of the country’s tourism offerings but also included a familiarization trip, granting me the privilege to experience Malawi firsthand. After a long journey, I arrived in Lilongwe on April 22, 2023, where I was warmly escorted to my accommodation at the President Hotel, located within the scenic Umodzi Park.
The President Hotel is renowned as one of the premier hotels in Lilongwe, boasting five-star ratings, modern amenities, and an excellent location. My spacious room offered comfort and tranquility, while the hotel’s restaurant presented a delightful array of traditional and Western dishes. Eager to immerse myself in the local culture, I indulged in my first traditional Malawian meal, which consisted of fish, nsima (a staple made from maize), relish, and beans. The flavors were exquisite, and I savored every bite, setting the tone for the culinary experiences that awaited me in Malawi.
Due to flight delays, I arrived later than my fellow team members, who had already embarked on their journey. However, the Malawi Department of Tourism made special arrangements for my transportation, ensuring I could join my group without delay. Meeting my colleagues from various nationalities was a highlight of the trip, as we shared a common interest in exploring the wonders of Malawi. Our tour leader, Ms. Thoko Chilanga from the Tourism Department, proved to be an exceptional guide. With her extensive knowledge of the country and its attractions, she enriched our experience with stories and insights that only a local expert could provide.
Our destination was Lake Malawi National Park, the only national park in Malawi specifically established to protect fish and aquatic habitats. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, the park is of global significance for biodiversity conservation, particularly due to its remarkable fish diversity. The mbuna, or cichlid fish, found in the lake represent a stunning example of evolutionary adaptation, making this destination a paradise for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike.
To reach our accommodation, we embarked on a twenty-minute boat ride across the shimmering waters of Lake Malawi. Our destination was the Blue Zebra Island Lodge, situated within the national park. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff, who welcomed us to this idyllic island known for its breathtaking views and tranquil atmosphere. The Blue Zebra Island Lodge is a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, offering nine exclusive tented en-suite chalets that overlook the lake. Some chalets even provide private lake access, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant underwater world teeming with colorful fish in the crystal-clear waters.
The lodge caters to guests on a full board basis, offering a diverse selection of meals that cater to various tastes and dietary requirements. The food is fresh and seasonal, prepared to international standards, and the staff is more than willing to accommodate any special dietary needs. The Fig Tree Bar, located within the lodge, offers an extensive range of drinks and cocktails, including some delightful Malawian specialties. Additionally, the lodge features a lake-view conference facility and a private entertaining area, making it suitable for business events as well.
Surrounded by nature and luxury, I found myself captivated by the serenity of the lodge and the stunning landscapes that enveloped it. The days spent at Blue Zebra Island Lodge were filled with a plethora of activities, from snorkeling in the lake’s pristine waters to exploring the nearby islands. Each excursion unveiled the rich biodiversity of the region, with opportunities to observe various bird species and learn about the unique ecosystems that thrive in and around Lake Malawi.
Due to the excellent freshwater of Lake Malawi National Park, we engaged in some thrilling water sports, including canoeing and kayaking through the calmer waters. These paddling expeditions offered us a passport to secluded beaches, islands, and exotic wildlife. One of the most memorable experiences was a guided snorkeling trip, where we encountered the mesmerizing mbuna cichlids in their natural habitat. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns of these fish were nothing short of spectacular, providing an unforgettable glimpse into the underwater world. Our guide shared fascinating insights about the different species, their behaviors, and the efforts being made to preserve their habitats. This intimate connection with nature deepened my appreciation for Malawi’s ecological treasures and the importance of sustainable tourism practices.
As our time in Lake Malawi National Park came to an end, and in preparation for the Malawi International Travel Expo, where the MITE 2023 awaited us. We set off to Lilongwe, took a a boat ride back to the mainland, a journey that took about 20 minutes. After which we drove for about 2-hours to Lilongwe, we arrived Lilongwe at 1400hrs , received at the Ufulu Garden Hotels in Lilongwe. This hotel is renowned for its beautiful gardens and great facilities, including a swimming pool, gym, shop, restaurant, and bar, all in the heart of the city. The exceptional services and remarkable hospitality of the staff left a lasting impression. The Malawi International Travel Expo (MITE) provided a platform for tourism stakeholders to showcase their offerings, network, and discuss the future of tourism in Malawi. Engaging with local operators, artisans, and cultural performers during the event allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s tourism landscape and the potential it holds for growth and development.
In conclusion, my experience in Malawi was nothing short of transformative. From the warm hospitality of the people to the breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity, every moment spent in this remarkable country left an indelible mark on my heart. As a travel and tour practitioner, I am now more committed than ever to promoting Malawi as a premier travel destination, sharing its beauty and culture with the world. The memories I created during my time in Malawi will continue to inspire me as I advocate for sustainable tourism practices that respect and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of this extraordinary nation.
